Sexual assault allegations may have caused the disgraced Kevin Spacey to get canned from HOUSE OF CARDS and famously replaced in ALL MONEY IN THE WORLD, but he still has one movie on the books. The movie, BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB, is still being released by Vertical Entertainment, and it just secured a summer slot after last week's trailer inspired discussions over its release.
The movie centers on a group of young men who try to get rich by starting a Ponzi scheme and has an all-star cast that includes Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, Cary Elwes, Suki Waterhouse, Billie Lourd, and Rosanna Arquette. Spacey only has a small place in the movie, apparently, but it’s still a notable supporting role, as seen in the trailer below. The movie was shot late 2015/early 2016, long before the accusations against Spacey came to light late last year.
No matter how small the role, the presence of the actor may be toxic for the movie as it tries to find a place in the indie market. Still, Vertical released a statement saying they want the movie and the work of the cast and crew to be noticed. They gave an official statement to TheWrap, saying:
We hope these distressing allegations pertaining to one person’s behavior — that were not publicly known when the film was made almost 2.5 years ago — do not tarnish the release. We don’t condone sexual harassment on any level and we fully support victims of it. At the same time, this is neither an easy nor insensitive decision to release this film in theaters, but we believe in giving the cast, as well as hundreds of crew members who worked hard on the film, the chance to see their final product reach audiences.
In the end, we hope audiences make up their own minds as to the reprehensible allegations of one person’s past, but not at the expense of the entire cast and crew present on this film.”
BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB hits VOD on July 17 and theaters August 17.
