CLERKS and TUSK director Kevin Smith kicked off his Monday morning by posting a behind-the-scenes pic from the set of his JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT, the much-anticipated sequel to 2001's JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK. The photo teases a return to the Blunt-Cave, a secret lair belonging to the perpetually-high-as-hell superheroes, Bluntman and Chronic.
Included alongside the photo is the following caption: “Week 3 of #JayAndSilentBobReboot begins with us going back to the Blunt-Cave! We brought the classic costumes in from @The_SecretStash [The Secret Stash, Smith's own Jersey-based comic book store] as set [decoration], but wait ‘til you see the *new* costumes! And wait ‘til you see who plays Bluntman and Chronic in their reboot…"
According to Smith's cinematic lore, the characters of Bluntman and Chronic were created in-universe by Banky Edwards (Jason Lee) and Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck). In actuality, the bong-wielding wastoid heroes were created by Smith alongside MADMAN comic book creator Mike Allred, who helped design their costumes. Originally introduced in Smith's 1997 romcom CHASING AMY, Bluntman and Chronic fight crime as part of their quest to defeat the dreaded Cock-Knocker, a villain played in JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK by STAR WARS alum Mark Hamill. In JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, Bluntman and Chronic were portrayed by Jason Biggs (SAVING SILVERMAN, AMERICAN PIE franchise) and DAWSON'S CREEK alum James Van Der Beek. As a part of the plot for Strikes Back, Jay and Silent Bob travel to Hollywood with the hope of putting a stop to the production of a Miramax-backed Bluntman and Chronic film.
Not long after his massive heart attack last in February of 2018, Smith commented on Jay and Silent Bob's return to the big screen by saying, “So audiences can expect something completely different: In Jay & Silent Bob Reboot our herbal heroes find out Hollywood is making a reboot of the old movie that was based on them, so they journey out to Hollywood to stop it again,” Smith expressed to his loyal fanbase. “I offer my (literal) undying thanks to our amazing partners at Saban and Universal for making this dream come true and backing this cinematic silliness!”
Who do you think will portray Bluntman and Chronic for Smith's JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT? My money is on Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine. It's just a shot in the dark, but I'd imagine that Smith will have called in a few favors to land some surprising, top-notch talent for the respective roles.
Let us know who you think should play Bluntman and Chronic in the upcoming film below!
