JAWS crosses a huge milestone this month by turning 45 and Universal Pictures is starting the celebration early. The studio has announced that they will be hosting an online watch party for the Steven Spielberg classic and they'll be doing so with CLERKS director, Kevin Smith.
During quarantine, online watch parties became a significant way for movie fans to enjoy a communal viewing experience since movie theaters went dark in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Typically, watch parties have been centered around classic films and it doesn't get much more classic than the movie that continues to make everyone afraid to take a dip in the ocean. JAWS was released in the summer of 1975 on June 20 and is considered by some to be the film that helped create and shape what we know as the summer blockbuster. Despite being plagued with production problems, the film was critically praised upon release it also turned into a huge box office hit with a global gross of $471.2 million off of a mere $7 million budget. In the film, when a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down. The movie stars Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton, and Carl Gottlieb.
