Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart are two actors who fall into the love ’em or hate ’em category in movies. Ferrell seems to more often be in the love area while there is a lot of hate for Kevin Hart‘s brand of humor. Personally, I see potential in Kevin Hart if he were to find the right project, but I do see how people could find him annoying. Chances are GET HARD is not going to do much to change that.
In the first trailer for TROPIC THUNDER screenwriter Etan Cohen‘s directorial debut, Hart and Ferrell play up to the racial stereotypes surrounding rich white people and how they perceive their lower income employees. Will Ferrell appears to be playing more of the straight man this time, something he did similarly in THE OTHER GUYS, but his character here just seems so incredibly incompetent it is hard to believe he is a multi-millionaire.
When millionaire hedge fund manager James (Will Ferrell) is nailed for fraud and bound for a stretch in San Quentin, the judge gives him 30 days to get his affairs in order. Desperate, he turns to Darnell (Kevin Hart) to prep him for a life behind bars. But despite James’ one-percenter assumptions, Darnell is a hard-working small business owner who has never received a parking ticket, let alone been to prison. Together, the two men do whatever it takes for James to “get hard” and, in the process, discover how wrong they were about a lot of things – including each other.
The trailer is fast-paced and has a few mild laughs, but I just don’t the sense there is much original to see here. At the very least, it is worth seeing for Alison Brie in sexy lingerie (you are welcome for the gif below), but beyond that this may be the first Will Ferrell movie I have almost no desire to see.
GET HARD opens a can of whoop ass on theaters beginning March 27, 2015.
