AVENGERS: ENDGAME is quickly approaching, and although the film will serve as the culmination of the past decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the hugely-profitable franchise will obviously continue onwards for years to come. It's been teased that what's to come in Phase Four will be quite different from the first three phases of the MCU, and one of those movies could very well be based upon The Eternals, the Jack Kirby-created series which follows an evolutionary offshoot of humanity created as an experiment by the Celestials.
We haven't heard all that much about THE ETERNALS since they tapped Matthew and Ryan Firpo to pen the script and Chloe Zhao to direct, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige offered a small update while speaking to Collider during press-day for the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL.
Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people. You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.
While you could argue that what made THE AVENGERS work so well was that we had a previous relationship to its main characters thanks to their standalone movies, you've also got GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY showing that you can successfully introduce a superhero ensemble in one shot. In the comics, the sage of The Eternals "began millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered and near-immortal beings and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants. The two races moved behind the scenes throughout human history while also engaging in Game of Thrones-style cosmic powerplays." Kevin Feige added that every film after AVENGERS: ENDGAME and SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME will be "different" and "unique," and that they'll be introducing a lot of characters who "the majority of the world has never heard of." Before the fourth phase of the MCU kicks off, we still have CAPTAIN MARVEL on March 8, 2019 and AVENGERS: ENDGAME on April 26, 2019.
