Kevin Feige reveals the Star Wars easter egg in every Marvel Phase Two movie

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

There is no doubt in my mind that STAR WARS and the Marvel Cinematic Universe share a lot in common. Aside from being owned by Disney, both companies have rabid fan-bases that follow their films and ancillary products like they were made out of solid gold. Both have track records for producing fan favorite movies and have done everything they could, especially in recent years, to promote their brand with the fan in mind. So, it should come as no surprise that they are fans of one another.

Kevin Feige, the man in charge of Marvel Studios, has overseen the massive phased growth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a way that no fan can argue with. We are getting movies that ten years ago seemed like fan fiction. So, when Feige revealed that there was a bit of an easter egg planted in all of the Phase Two films of the MCU, you better believe we looked into it.

Here's what Feige told Cinema Blend.

So is this a spoiler for Ant-Man… not really. I’m obsessed with Star Wars. Who’s not? I’m 40 years old. I’m in the movie business. I went to USC. So I’m obsessed with Star Wars – and it didn’t start out as intentional, but it became intentional, including that beat that you referenced. It sort of happens in every Star Wars movie, but I was sort of looking at it, ‘Okay, is Phase Two our Empire Strikes Back?’ Not really, but tonally things are a little different. Somebody gets their arm cut off in every Phase Two movie. Every single one.

Lo and behold, if you go through all of the Phase Two films, there is an arm getting cut off in each one. In IRON MAN 3, Aldrich Killian loses his arm. In THOR: THE DARK WORLD, Thor loses his to Loki. In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, Bucky gets his appendage removed. In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, Groot gets hacked by Gamora. That means that in both AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and ANT-MAN we should expect to see at least one person get dismembered.

Whether it be a coincidence or not, Feige is not known to bullshit fans. If this was entirely intentional, I applaud these geeks for being geekier than we gave them credit for. Hopefully it pans out when AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON opens May 1st and ANT-MAN opens on July 17th.
