As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand its brand with bigger and better installments in theaters and on TV, one slice of the MCU seems to have fallen by the wayside; the Marvel One-Shots. The One-Shots were (are) a series of short films that Marvel included on several of its Blu-ray releases which helped to fill in details, expand characters, and in some cases, bring about entirely new revelations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The last Marvel One-Shot, All Hail the King, was included on THOR: THE DARK WORLD's Blu-ray release which was back in February of 2014. Since then, we've heard little and seen nothing of the Marvel One-Shots which has left many us of wondering what had happened to them.
Collider caught up with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige during press-day for ANT-MAN and mentioned that they were disappointed that they hadn't seen any Marvel One-Shots for a while.
I’m disappointed too! Frankly, and I think it would be great to see more one-shots. We’ll see… You look at me as if I’m the only person who controls that decision; I wish that were the case. But I think when the opportunity arises we would do it, we would jump on it. There is a backlog of ideas for one-shots that we haven’t done yet.
As the head of the studio you'd think Kevin Feige wouldn't need to ask permission to get the Marvel One-Shots going again but it's never always as simple as that. One possible reason being kicked around is the so-called demise of physical media; funding and shooting a short for DVD/Blu-ray may not be worth the time and expense it once was when that money and effort could be used on their increasingly large slate of feature projects instead. Marvel is one busy company as we know.
It certainly sounds as though Feige wants to find a way to bring the One-Shots back and I wholeheartedly believe that he should as soon as he can; as well as providing some fun Marvel entertainment in bite-sized form, I feel as though these shorts can be used as a proving ground for young writers and directors to cut their teeth on before possibly moving up the chain to Marvel features. It could be Marvel's own little film school, get on it Feige.
What kind of stories/characters would you like to see featured in future Marvel One-Shots?
