Most remakes like to include a few nods to the original and perhaps even an original cast-member or two, and the upcoming remake of Joel Schumacher's 1990 sci-fi/horror FLATLINERS is no exception. The original starred Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, and Kevin Bacon as "a group of medical students who journey into the afterworld to find meaning in their own lives before being resuscitated in the nick of time. As expected, the experiments soon go awry." Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons will be starring in the remake and now Deadline reports that Kiefer Sutherland will be joining them as a "seasoned doctor."

Although his deal hasn't completely closed, the outlet reports that Sutherland has committed to doing the project after the schedule was worked out in order for the actor to appear in both FLATLINERS and his new ABC series Designated Survivor. Niels Arden Oplev, director of the original GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, will direct from a screenplay by Ben Ripley (SOURCE CODE) and production is set to kick off in Toronto later this week.

Designated Survivor will find Sutherland starring as Tom Kirkman, a lower-level cabinet member who unexpectedly becomes president after a devastating attack on Washington. He will struggle to prevent the country and his own family from falling into chaos, as he is thrust into one of the most difficult presidencies in history. Designated Survivor will debut on ABC on September 21st.
