Update:
As a part of today's Star Trek Universe New York City Comic-Con virtual panel, details pertaining to Star Trek: Discovery had been unveiled.
In Season 3, Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) arrives 930 years in the future, navigating a galaxy she no longer recognizes, while searching for the rest of the U.S.S. Discovery crew. Now living in a time filled with uncertainty, the crew and some familiar and new faces, including the recently announced cast additions Blu del Barrio and Ian Alexander, work together to restore hope to the Federation. “We land in 3188,” said Martin-Green, during the panel. “It’s all about the crew, getting together and figuring out where we are, what’s happened, how are we going to navigate where we are. It’s so simple but so profound: Where are we? Who are we going to be?”
Doug Jones, who plays Saru, was also in attendance for today's panel, and he made sure that fans are prepared for events to come by saying, “Burnham and Saru are equally capable for the captain’s chair.”

Captain's log, USS Voyager (NCC-1008-D), 2020: We've recently received a transmission stating that Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway for 170 episodes on Star Trek: Voyager, will reprise her iconic role on Nickelodeon and CBS Studios’ new animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. Today's exciting announcement happened toward the tail-end of the Star Trek Universe New York City Comic-Con virtual panel.
While responding to the announcement, Mulgrew excitedly said, “I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”
Executive producer Alex Kurtzman was also in attendance, and celebrated the good news by gushing, “Captain Janeway was held to a different standard than her predecessors. She was asked to embody an inhuman level of perfection in order to be accepted as ‘good enough’ by the doubters but showed them all what it means to be truly outstanding. We can think of no better captain to inspire the next generation of dreamers on Nickelodeon, than she.”
Lastly, Ramsey Naito, President of Nickelodeon Animation added, “Kate’s portrayal of Captain Janeway is truly iconic, and has resonated with a global audience for many years. We can’t wait to see her bring this character to life in a whole new way, while continuing to be an inspiration for both new and loyal fans.”
While the Star Wars Universe has grown somewhat quiet as of late – with the exception of Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian Season 2 set for an October 30th release on Disney+ – Star Trek fans are living the high life right now with so many projects set to launch within the fabled franchise. Let's make a list, shall we? If for no other reason than to bask in all the Star Trek-related glory. We've got Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks all going strong. Then you have Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on the way as well as a Section 31-based series starring Michelle Yeoh to look forward to as well! That's a whole lot of Star Trek right there, and much of it sounds really exciting as the time-honored property continues to grow.
Are you pumped for Mulgrew to reprise her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway for Star Trek: Prodigy? I sure hope so, because this is a pretty sweet get. Stay tuned over the next few months to find out who else is joining the cast of Nickelodeon's animated Star Trek series.
