Karen Gillan on Guardians 2, Avengers: Infinity War & her Jumanji outfit

Karen Gillan Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Avengers: Infinity War Jumanji

Karen Gillan certainly has a busy year ahead of her, in addition to reprising her role of Nebula in the upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, she will also star alongside Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart in JUMANJ, the spiritual sequel to the Robin Williams led film of the same name. Gillan is also making her directorial feature debut on an untitled film (previously called TUPPERWARE PARTY before the company caught wind of it) and it was on the Glasgow, Scotland set where THR caught up with the actress to discuss her upcoming projects.

How GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 compares to the first:

I’m so excited for people to see it! I just feel like it’s all of the best elements of the first one, just amplified. It’s even better – it’s funnier, the music’s even better … the second album is a blinder. It’s great. And in the first one everyone was being established. Now that that’s out of the way, you really get to delve into all of their dilemmas and things like that. I think family would really be the main theme of the thing. And my character Nebula is dealing with a whole lot of stuff there – we see a whole new side to her. A much more human side actually, where we understand how truly awful and difficult her daddy issues are.

Karen Gillan confirms that Nebula will be just as grumpy in the GUARDIANS sequel, but this time, we'll find out why. It was also recently announced that Gillan would be making an appearance in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR alongside Zoe Saldana's Gamora. Gillan naturally wasn't allowed to say much, but did say that Nebula would be "making a cheeky appearance there" and that she's "pretty happy with how much she gets to do." Turning to JUMANJI, you might recall the controversy which erupted following the reveal of Gillan's outfit from the film, but the actress once again assured fans that there's a reason for her costume.

I’ve experienced something similar when I worked on Doctor Who and there was such an uproar about my costume when that was first revealed, so I thought it was happening all over again. But I have to say, I'd never take on a role that was truly gratuitous for no reason. There’s a really valid reason why she’s wearing that. My character is really not happy about it!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is set for a May 5, 2017 release, to be followed by JUMANJI on December 22, 2017 and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR on May 4, 2018.
