Kal Penn says that there’s an idea for Harold & Kumar 4

John Cho and Kal Penn have certainly come a long way from being "that Asian guy from AMERICAN PIE" and "that Indian guy from VAN WILDER," but that doesn't mean that they're about to leave their past behind. In 2004, the pair starred in the stoner comedy HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE, which spawned two sequels, HAROLD & KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY and A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS. The films were relatively successful for their budgets and received decent reviews, but it's been nearly a decade since audiences got their last fix of Harold & Kumar.

While speaking on a panel for the upcoming NBC comedy Sunnyside at the Television Critics Associations summer press-tour, Kal Penn was asked by /Film about the possibility of a fourth installment of the franchise. The actor revealed that HAROLD & KUMAR creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have actually started developing ideas for a new film. "Hey, we were just talking about that with Jon and Hayden, the two guys who wrote it," Penn said, but added that it's still a little ways off from coming together given the busy schedules of everyone involved. "They’re busy working on Cobra Kai," Penn explained. "John and I both have our own things this year so I think our hope is towards the end of the year, we’d like to toss something around and see what might work." Someone call Neil Patrick Harris!

Of course, I wouldn't hold my breath, but it's somewhat refreshing that Kal Penn and John Cho haven't outgrown a little stoner humour. John Cho actually pitched his own idea for a fourth HAROLD & KUMAR film several years ago. "I didn’t think [there’d be another Harold & Kumar]," Cho told DenOfGeek back in 2016. "But I thought of a really great idea, and I pitched it out to the director when we happened to be having dinner one night. And I don't know…I think we're gonna get this made." What'd I say about not holding your breath?
