Paramount has bumped back STAR TREK BEYOND by two weeks, pushing it from July 8 to July 22, and the move could have a major impact on the film's box office potential.
Warner Bros. has secured all the IMAX screens for its July 1 release of David Yates' TARZAN starring Alexander Skarsgard, leaving none for the third "Nu-Star Trek" flick. The movie will get an IMAX run with the release date shift, however it will still have to share screens with Guy Ritchie's KNIGHTS OF THE ROUNDTABLE: KING ARTHUR (which might be getting a new release date as well, according to THR), and will also open against ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE, the fifth installment in the animated franchise.
In addition, STAR TREK BEYOND will now be in theaters a week after the release of Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS, and a week before BOURNE 5 is scheduled to open. How much do you think the film will earn in its debut weekend?
STAR TREK BEYOND began principal photography back in June with Fast and Furious 3-6's Justin Lin behind the camera, with new cast members that include Sofia Boutella (KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE) and Idris Elba as the movie's villain.
