Fast 9 director Justin Lin gives details about Fast & Furious 10 & 11

Fast 9 director Justin Lin is giving us some details about Fast & Furious 10 and 11 following the movie’s box office performance, which currently makes it the highest-grossing movie of the year at the global box office.

During a chat with Collider, Lin confirmed that Fast & Furious 10 and 11 would be one chapter set across two films. These movies will tie up all the loose ends that have been dangling in the franchise since it made its debut in 2001 and will serve as a definitive conclusion for the central storyline involving Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and his Fast crew. Here is what Lin had to say:

“The idea of the last chapter being two films is correct. I have to say, I’m so glad — because I think when I first entered this franchise, a sequel was not a given. You had to earn it, you know? And so to be sitting here talking to you and go, ‘Oh yeah, there’s gonna be two more movies!’ I’m like, ‘Wow.’ It means a lot. So, every day when I wake up, I’m trying to reconfigure and make sure hopefully whatever we’re talking about process wise is gonna yield the best result. But I think having one chapter in two movies is correct. That’s where I sit today.”

Despite the next installments ending the main franchise, Lin hopes that the brand will continue in some capacity after the final film is released. During a separate talk with Screenrant, Lin said that he has had numerous conversations with the actors about their characters and that they believe there is ample room to tell stories in a streaming landscape even after the main series comes to an end. Here is what he had to say:

“Well, obviously things have shifted and they change. And obviously, you think about TV, it’s streaming. Streaming, there’s all these different mediums. One of the things I enjoy most about making these films is the element of talking to the actors about their characters and their journey, because our cast and our world has become so big. And I can tell you 80% of our conversation, you don’t see on screen.”

Universal Pictures has already expanded on the franchise with the spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, which has a sequel in development, and the female-led spinoff also continues to be a part of the conversation. Considering the Fast franchise has cleared $6.29 billion worldwide, it’s no surprise that all involved believe and want the brand to continue and expand.
