This may have been Comic-Con @ Home weekend, but another Con was going on out there – Justice Con – celebrating Zack Snyder’s JUSTICE LEAGUE, or as it’s most famously known – The Snyder Cut! Hosted by Nerd Queens and benefitting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Ink to the People, the whole thing was streamed on the Justice Con Youtube Channel and continues through Sunday.
Now, one of the characters most rumored to benefit in this new cut of the film is Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, who was a guest of the con this weekend. His whole panel is embedded below, but he had some strong words for Joss Whedon, saying that “the man is probably scared, and he should because we are going to get to the heart of EVERYTHING that went down." More on that below along with other highlights from the panel, which you can watch in its entirety at the bottom of the page.
- Fisher said he’s in shock and awe and proud of the fans who pushed for the Snyder Cut to be re-released. He even went so far as to say that even if this was the only experience he ever had in show-business, it’s worth it because this is history-making.
- Had a lot of pride in his work with Snyder, and appreciated fans picking up on his “not-so-subtle” cues over the years as he expressed himself over his wish for a Snyder Cut.
- It was noted that Fisher was the first cast-member to push for it, with the others only picking up after he spoke up.
- Noted that of everyone he really has the least to lose by speaking out as he lives simply, has no kids, so felt free to live up to the ideals of the character he portrayed by speaking up.
- Also gave Chris Terrio and Deborah Snyder big shout-outs. Proudly said both Terrio and the Snyder’s are allies to those who lack power. They treat everyone with dignity and respect.
- Respects Snyder’s darker vision for Superman noting, not unreasonably if an alien came down to earth with superpowers, do we think people would greet him with open arms when we can barely get along with each other?
- Loves the Ultimate edition of BATMAN V SUPERMAN, saying he just re-watched it two days ago and is still picking it apart.
- Said he learned he got the role originally while reading through the script to STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON. Said he was reading other things to distract him from how much he wanted to do JUSTICE LEAGUE. Said he was rolling around on the floor screaming once he found out – and the first call was to his mom. Said he couldn’t even tell her about the film but told her something “big” had happened.
- Appreciated Terrio sitting down with him and specifically asking him for his perspective on everything about the character as a black man. There were a long of angles and considerations that went into the conception of the character, from him being black to differently-abled. Appreciated how much Terrio appreciated that and was open to having a dialogue.
- Also noted Terrio never wrote Cyborg as a “black person” but rather just as an interesting character and that he had a truly great time with Terrio, and also Nic Pizzolatto on True Detective.
- Finally – on Joss Whedon. Says there’s no comparison he can make between Whedon and Snyder. Stands by his comments and says every single one of his comments is true.
- He said he’s been in projects where people disagree, but there’s only a certain amount of behavior one can tolerate and when people dismiss them you have to speak up.
- He’s been assembling information so people can tell their stories in a confidential way where they won’t have to face the consequences.
- Fisher himself seems fine accepting any consequences that come up “If I have to take the hit for this, I’ll take it completely.
- Invited Whedon to sue him for libel and slander if anything he said is untrue.
- Also had VERY strong words for Jon Berg and his statement.
- He said people are in the know and he doesn’t have to justify his role.
- About whether it affects his career- “I could not care less.”
- Called Charisma Carpenter and Kai Cole (Whedon's ex) brave for speaking up.
- To all the detractors: "I forgive you in advance because you don't have all the information."
- Noted that despite what happened behind the scenes, there are some great moments in the theatrical version of JUSTICE LEAGUE.
- On whether he would reprise Cyborg on Doom Patrol opposite their own Cyborg: "it depends". Mentioned that if had a great "moment of wholeness" and went deep, "sign me up!"
- Gace Jovian Wave a big shout out and encouraged him to keep doing what he's doing.
- Is he going to DC Fan Dome? "Next question!" (with a smile)
- Loved the Henry Cavill PC video
- In a big surprise, Zack Snyder himself crashed the panel.
- Fisher noted the first DVD he ever bought was Snyder's version of DAWN OF THE DEAD.
- Played coy when it came to FLASHPOINT.
- Says he knows Ezra Miller is really excited about it.
- On whether Miller will still be in it – couldn't say anything. Hopes so.
- Liked the potential reveal of General Swanwick as Martian Manhunter.
- Had high praise for Harry Lennix and also Laurence Fishburne playing characters in positions of authority. Said even if its subconscious it changes people's thinking.
- Said if you go back and watch MAN OF STEEL it seems like Lennix playing Martian Manhunterwas always the plan.
