Jurassic World 2 will be the scariest film in the franchise

I was pleasantly surprised by JURASSIC WORLD. I didn't want to see it, but I was dragged to the theater by a friend of mine. She kept ribbing me throughout as I couldn't help but scoff and sigh at some of the dumber parts towards the beginning and middle sections. But then boy did I embarrass myself in front of the whole theater once the "Open paddock Nine" scene hit.

I'm pretty sure I cried. Others might call in sobbing. Or weeping openly.

Whatever it was, I was hooked in like a kid again. But all that said, one of the things the series has been missing since the days of T-Rex's in the rain and raptors in the kitchen, is the sense of fear. Real fear. It's easy to forget as jaded horror fans, but the original JURASSIC PARK is considered to be a genuinely scary movie to the general public.

And I can see why.

Turns out the filmmakers behind the upcoming sequel, JURASSIC WORLD 2 fell the same and are planning to bring the series back to the realm of the frightening. WORLD director and WORLD 2 producer, Colin Treveroow spoke with CinemaBlend the other day and eventually, they talked about new director J.A. Bayona's approach to the fear of dinos in the dark.

Colin Trevorrow on J.A. Bayona and JURASSIC WORLD 2:

J.A Bayona is very good at [creating scares]. There are things that he'll just do with a shadow, or a rustling curtain on a wall. He's so tapped into that kind of fear, especially the fear through the eyes of a child. He and I are just simpatico, as an American and a Spanish person. We may be the mirrors of each other. It is by far the most satisfying collaboration of my life.

Great. Good to hear. If you have seen Bayona's THE ORPHANAGE you know Trevorrow isn't just blowing smoke here. That said, Cinema Blend – and myself – were left wondering if this is really the approach the filmmakers think will be accepted by the mainstream audiences who have come to expect adventure and action from the JURASSIC flicks. Not terror.

Trevorrow on mixing true scares with action and adventure:

First of all, I think the mainstream loves being scared, and I think the scares in the first movie were made to make children think like they were seeing something horrifying, that their parents shouldn't be allowing them to see. We have that a little bit here. But there's also that same big, fun adventure, sweeping, romantic kind of action in part of the movie. That people seemingly responded really well too. We're not throwing it all way, but we're definitely going to some new places.
