Colin Trevorrow says Jurassic World 2 will be a metaphor for animal abuse

Any good sci-fi film should have a message about the state of the modern world. Taking a glimpse into the future (or alternate reality. Not dogging on the alternate realities) should offer a complex look at our present day. I mean, it should also offer hover cars, androids and/or beasts running amok, but underneath all that glorious goodness we should be able to see a reflection of our own society. It just helps if that reflection is in a pool of blood left by a T-Rex's victim.

JURASSIC WORLD director Colin Trevorrow (who will produce the sequel) recently spoke with El Mundo (via Collider) about the underlying message in JURASSIC WORLD 2, and how it differs from the first:

“The dinosaurs will be a parable of the treatment animals receive today: the abuse, medical experimentation, pets, having wild animals in zoos like prisons, the use the military has made of them, animals as weapons.”

Trevorrow went on to say how the sequel will be more “complex” than the first, talking about how that film was about the problems that exist in a capitalistic society. Animal experimentation and militarization was also a running theme within the first JURASSIC WORLD, but Trevorrow made the point that the sequel will take the series down a new road, hence why they decided to hire director J.A. Bayona:

“The second part will be a very different movie that will explore new paths. For that reason, it was clear that it needed to be Bayona who would direct it, in order to have it grow and evolve with his very personal vision.”

What Trevorrow is talking about is not all new to the JURASSIC series. Going back to JURASSIC PARK it’s obvious the movie acts as a metaphor about the folly of capitalism, and how it can lead to an abuse of nature and animals. So it’s a familiar morality tale, but a timeless one, so it’s great the people behind WORLD 2 are trying to inject a message in the mayhem. Bayona is a very passionate director, and I’m sure he will be able to get to the heart of the issue effectively. If not, I’m sure he will kill off some background extras in a glorious, bloody fashion.

JURASSIC WORLD 2 stomps into theaters June 22, 2018 with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, and is directed by J.A. Bayona
