Jurassic Park: Jeff Goldblum tries to justify iconic shirtless scene that later became a meme

Jeff Goldblum is set to return as Ian Malcolm in this weekend’s Jurassic World: Dominion and doing the press tour has given him a chance to try to justify his iconic shirtless scene in 1993’s Jurassic Park would later become a pretty hilarious meme.

In a midst of all the dino-action in Jurassic Park, Goldblum is featured during one scene lying on his back with his shirt unbuttoned and his chest exposed. The shot of him shirtless has certainly gone on to be the stuff of legend on the internet with hilarious memes created and various videos that feature sexy saxophone music playing in the background as the camera lingers over Goldblum. The scene has not only launched memes, but it also spawned actual toys and there was also a giant shirtless Jeff Goldblum statue that once graced London. While appearing on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Goldblum discussed the signature moment and he even illustrated it for the audience using a shirtless Ian Malcolm toy. As to why his shirt is open bare in the scene? Goldblum was a bit hazy on the exact details and can’t remember if it was director Steven Spielberg or himself that made the decision to loosen up his buttons. Goldblum said, “Did I say, ‘Steven, please let me, as long as I’m here, you know, you don’t want to miss this,” or did he say, “Jeff, please, come on, let’s see something.” You can see the rest of Goldblum’s response below!

“No. I don’t think those things happened. I think in the actorly way, I think my character, even though you see this thing on the leg [of Jurassic Park toy]. My leg, of course, had some difficulty. I think I had an injury that is not depicted here. But in the movie, whether you see it below the screen or not, there’s something going on there [in the lower abdomen]. If you can get some evidence for that, you know, that will be my story.”

It really is funny how this moment has gained so much life over the years. If Jeff Goldblum ever had a moment when he smoldered, I guess this was it. At least it’s not an embarrassing meme. It’s a moment in time when Jeff Goldblum seduced the camera and the audience in an attempt to spice up Spielberg’s dinosaur movie. If anyone was meant to do this, it was Goldblum.
