Disney has dropped the first trailer for their latest attempt at turning one of their theme park rides into a movie franchise – this time with the adventure movie JUNGLE CRUISE starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The first trailer pairs Blunt’s optimistic explorer with Johnson’s charming, con-man boat captain as she hires him to take her across the river as she hunts down a legendary tree. It’s just like AFRICAN QUEEN with Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, but with more CGI snakes and a greater chance of Captain Marvel flying by.

The first trailer recalls the early days of Disney’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise, sporting an old-school adventure movie feel with some charismatic lead performers and a sense of pure excitement. We're mostly getting an intro to the characters and the story here, but there are glimpses at the kind of action anyone should expect from both a Disney movie and a Johnson vehicle. That means an expensive-looking set piece and a big fight scene where Johnson throws a thug through some sort of barrier. So, if you're the kind of person who has itches for both Disney and Johnson action, this movie seems like it will scratch them both. And then you have the charm of Blunt to elevate it all even more, so really, it's win-win-win.
Jaume Collet-Serra (THE SHALLOWS) directs with Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti co-starring.
