As the Jake Kasdan-directed JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE continues to dominate the box office, with a collected total of $679 million in worldwide receipts thus far, it's no wonder that Sony is looking to explore other entertainment avenues for the rebooted family title. On Thursday, Variety exclusively announced that Sony Pictures Virtual Reality has entered into a partnership with with Los Angeles-based virtual reality (VR) firm Survios to bring the recently-revamped “Jumanji: The VR Adventure” to VR arcades across the globe.
Already available in 50 VR arcade locations operated by VRX last month, Sony is now preparing to potentially ship "Jumanji: The VR Adventure" to hundreds of other locations in 36 countries. For the game, players control the Jumanji heroes from the film from a third-person perspective. As you make your way through the jungle and its variety of locations, you'll be tasked with solving a series of puzzlers in addition to engaging in hand-to-hand combat with enemies. Survivos also has plans to release the Jumanji VR experience for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive systems this month, as well as Sony’s PlayStation VR in February.
In announcing their partnership with Sony, Survios Chief Business Officer Seth Gerson, expressed that he's pleased to know that Sony "shares our vision of expanding VR’s global reach through great content and experiences." He then added that, “’Jumanji’ is a beloved film that’s perfectly set in virtual reality, and we’re excited to bring the experience into our distribution network, that gives the franchise access to the largest location-based VR audience.”
You can check out some gameplay footage by watching the trailer below:
Mmm'yeah … I don't know about this one, folks. The animation looks quite rough, and I'm not exactly certain of how a the third-person-perspective will lend to the game's intended immersion factor. It's pretty cool that the actual voices of the film's cast (Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan) are there. Though all I'm hearing, in this trailer, are pre-recorded clips cribbed from the film itself and nothing more. With that said, the footage is only a near-minute long. It could be that "Jumanji: The VR Adventure" is hiding more than a few surprises as you make your way deeper into the experience's virtual jungle. Perhaps if good word of mouth starts to spread, I'll check this out when it hits Playstation VR, next month.
JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE is in theaters now.
