JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE was released just days after STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, and, to the surprise of many, the JUMANJI sequel not only wound up thrilling critics with just how fun it was, but it also gave THE LAST JEDI a run for its money at the box-office. JUMANJI is quickly closing in on $800 million worldwide, and has remained at the #1 spot for the last several weeks. Most impressive.
Sony Pictures obviously isn't going to sit on a success like that, and although it hasn't been officially announced, The Wall Street Journal (via The Playlist) has reported that Sony chief Tom Rothman is putting together another JUMANJI sequel which he hopes to have in theaters for Christmas 2019, which just so happens to be when STAR WARS: EPISODE IX will debut. It's certainly a gutsy move to go up against a STAR WARS film, but hey, it worked the first time around. It's far too early to say whether Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, or Jack Black will return, but as they served as the avatars of the real-life players in the film, it's possible they could return for the sequel with new players inhabiting their bodies. Plus, nothing keeps a franchise truckin' along like Dwayne Johnson. I expect we'll be hearing something more official before too long.
Do you think another JUMANJI sequel could replicate the success of WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE?
