Next year’s CAPTAIN MARVEL will be all about Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), but surrounding her is a team of alien warriors – most important among them is Jude Law’s character. The actor spoke with EW as part of their massive coverage of the movie and revealed what few details he was able to about who his character is and what his relationship with Danvers is.

Though we all assumed Law would be playing Walter Lawson/Mar-Vell in the movie, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are refusing to give out his real name yet, meaning there might be more of a mystery to him than we thought. But all we need to know about him right now is that he’s a skilled warrior and leader of the Starforce unit, and someone who is completely devout to the Kree cause.
“He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people,” Law says. “So he’s almost a devout warrior — unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational.”
Law then spoke about where his character stands with Danvers, hinting at a mentor-mentee dynamic, wherein he understands the good she can do with her powers.
“These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control,” Law says. “That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”
Larson added to this, saying their bond perhaps creates some friction with the rest of the unit.
“There’s a lot and back and forth that comes with the two of them, which kind of creates a little bit of tension with the rest of Starforce. Like, ‘Why do they have a special relationship, and why isn’t it me?’”

EW also revealed more details about the rest of the characters in the Starforce unit (above), like Gemma Chan’s Minn-Erva, a deadly sniper (she’s sporting her weapon in the photo), and Djimon Hounsou’s Korath. We saw him in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, but this movie takes place before he goes around hanging out with Ninja Turtle-looking thugs. Then there’s another GUARDIANS character – Ronan (Lee Pace) – who is yet to defect from the rest of the Kree in the movie and is still a respected member of the community. He still has that hammer though, and we all know what he can do with that thing.
I'm wondering what's going on with Law's character now considering the filmmakers won't give out his name. Maybe he really is Lawson/Mar-Vell and they're just walking it back. Who knows. Still, I think he and Larson will make for a fine pairing and he's just one more reason why we should all be excited about Marvel's latest superhero epic. Am I praying for him to meet Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark for a SHERLOCK HOLMES reunion? Yes, yes I am.
CAPTAIN MARVEL arrives March 8, 2019.
