Much like Ari Aster's MIDSOMMAR, HBO's upcoming limited series THE THIRD DAY finds its lead character becoming trapped in what first looks like a remote paradise, before the veil is lifted and it's made clear that all is not what it seems.
For those looking to tune in, you should know that THE THIRD DAY is is divided into two parts: “Summer” and “Winter.” In “Summer,” one man (Jude Law) visits a mysterious island off the British coast and discovers a group of inhabitants intent on preserving their home at any cost. In the second half, aka “Winter,” a strong-willed outsider (Naomie Harris) comes to the island seeking answers — but instead causes a battle to decide its fate.
Along with Law and Harris, the limited series also stars Katherine Waterston (the FANTASTIC BEASTS film series), Emily Watson (CHERNOBYL), and Paddy Considine (THE OUTSIDER), among others.
The show, which arrives as an HBO and Sky co-production, was created by Felix Barrett and Dennis Kelly. “Summer” is written by Kelly and directed by Marc Munden, while “Winter” is written by Kit de Wall, Dean O’Loughlin and Kelly and directed by Philippa Lowthorpe. The series is executive-produced by Barrett, Kelly, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.
Dammit, it's shows like this that make me wish that I was an HBO subscriber. Personally, this trailer for THE THIRD DAY is giving me some IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS and THE WICKER MAN vibes. The footage on display here has the series looking strange as hell, and that's pretty much cat nip for my taste in film and television. Oh well, I suppose I'll have to wait for it to arrive on Blu-ray, or perhaps I'll sign up for a free trial just so I can check it out. Either way, I think this looks cool as hell.
The first episode of THE THIRD DAY will premiere via HBO on May 11.
