If you’ve felt that Judd Apatow‘s (THIS IS 40, FUNNY PEOPLE) feature film fare has been lacking, this may come as a nice surprise. Apatow is teaming up with Paul Rust (writer on Arrested Development) and Lesley Arfin (writer on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Girls) to bring what Netflix is calling an “unflinching, hilarious and excruciatingly honest take on modern relationships”. Netflix has made a two-season commitment to the series, called Love, which will debut with 10 episodes in 2016 and 12 the following year. The story will follow Gus (Paul Rust) and Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) as they navigate the exhilaration and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, and other things they were hoping to avoid.
Judd Apatow had this to say about Love:
I am so excited to get to work with Paul and Lesley on this project. Netflix has been supportive in ways I couldn’t create in my wildest fever dreams.
Judd Apatow hasn’t always had the most luck when it comes to television (FREAKS AND GEEKS, UNDECLARED) so here’s hoping that now that he’s a much bigger name, this show has a chance to flourish on Netflix. I feel that while his movies are conceptually fantastic, they always tend to run a little long. With episodes limited to 30 minutes each, that allows him to both tell a much longer story (over the course of a season) while keeping mini-arcs self-contained. Either way, Netflix has a lot of exciting new shows on deck (Marvel anyone?) and an exciting business model that allows its audience to marathon a season at their own will. I can’t wait!
Apatow’s next feature-film, TRAINWRECK, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Brie Larson, will hit cinemas on July 24, 2015.
