Who wouldn't? With the Star Wars machine likely rolling on until long after we're all dead, I'd imagine that everyone who would like to direct a Star Wars film will get their chance at some point. One person who would like to add their name to that list is Joss Whedon. Following the release of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, Whedon seemed a little burnt out after working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for several years and decided to make a clean break with the studio. Whedon has mostly remained under the radar since then, even quitting Twitter, and has spent his time working on his own smaller projects. Whedon's name has come up in relation to Star Wars several times, but as he was busy playing with an equally large franchise at the time he didn't want to move right on to another one. While speaking with Complex, the director revealed that the recent trailer for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY has opened him up to the idea once again.
Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, "I don't want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?" But I saw the trailer for Rogue awhile ago and I was like, "I want to do that." To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture.
Whedon was once in the running to direct STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, but it sounds like he'd rather not be involved with the "bigger picture". With a different Star Wars spin-off hitting theaters every other year, we'll likely see Joss Whedon's take on the Star Wars universe before too long, assuming he still wants to. ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
