Joss Whedon will shoot some Avengers: Age of Ultron scenes in South Korea

With shooting in Johannesburg, South Africa underway, Joss Whedon is adding another international locale to the itinerary for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. It was announced that the sequel will shoot in Seoul, South Korea. No details on what will be shot there aside from Whedon hinting “key elements” will come into play. Principal filming begins next month in England with some scenes also being shot in Italy and the United States.

While Captain America clearly has his origin nation emblazoned within his name, other heroes like Thor and Iron Man have enjoyed global exposure in their recent films, with THOR: THE DARK WORLD taking place in England and IRON MAN 3 in China. Marvel bigwig Kevin Feige shared the reasoning for shooting in Seoul to The Hollywood Reporter

“South Korea is the perfect location for a movie of this magnitude because it features cutting-edge technology, beautiful landscapes and spectacular architecture.”

With THE AVENGERS being a global phenomenon, it makes sense to position the team as defenders of Earth rather than of the United States. Shooting across the world will not only make the film more marketable, it makes plot sense as well.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON opens everywhere on May 1, 2015.
