Josh Brolin is making it clear that a third Sicario film is still in the cards. While he doesn’t have any official updates about when or how it’s moving forward, he believes that it has not been abandoned and “deserves” to be made.
During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor admits that it has been written and rewritten so the intent is there to get it made, even if those involved may be old as dirt once it gets done:
“I just don’t know when we’ll do it. We may be 80. (Laughs.) But it’s very much at the forefront of all of our minds. It’s been written and it’s been rewritten. So it’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it. So don’t give up! (Laughs.)”
The first Sicario was released in 2015 and was directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script by Taylor Sheridan. The film follows an FBI agent who is enlisted by a government task force to bring down the leader of a powerful Mexican drug cartel. Sicario earned raves from critics, scoring a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing at the 88th Academy Awards. On a budget of $30 million, the film grossed $46.9 million domestically and $84.9 million worldwide. In addition to Brolin, the film stars Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro.
The sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, was directed by Stefano Sollima from a script by Taylor Sheridan and it follows the drug war at the U.S.-Mexico border and an attempt by the United States government to incite increased conflict among the cartels. The film stars Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan, Raoul Trujillo, Isabela Moner, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener. Reviews weren’t as good as the first film but still decent at 62% fresh and, on a budget of $35 million, the movie grossed $50.1 million domestically and $75.8 million worldwide.
