Josh Brolin is rocking a flat top in first image from Inherent Vice

The first image from Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE has landed online, but unfortunately it's a scan from the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, and the picture isn't very big. At least we do get a glimpse at the excellent flat top Josh Brolin will be sporting as Detective Christian "Bigfoot" Bjornsen in Anderson's adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel. This first image also gives us another look at Joaquin Phoenix's Doc Sportello.

Book synopsis from Amazon:

It's been a while since Doc Sportello has seen his ex- girlfriend. Suddenly she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. It's the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment, like "trip" or "groovy," except that this one usually leads to trouble.

Based on what I know about Thomas Pynchon's book, Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE won't be a straight up comedy, but the tone of the film will likely be a lot lighter compared to his other movies. The first trailer for INHERENT VICE will probably be released soon, and I can't wait to check it out.

INHERENT VICE also stars Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Maya Rudolph and Jena Malone, and it will be in select theaters on December 12, 2014 before opening wide on January 9, 2015.
