After some speculation, it looks like Josh Brolin will in fact take the lead in Spike Lee’s remake of OLDBOY.
Josh Brolin? Awesome. OLDBOY remake? *grumble, grumble, grumble*
I thought they had him in mind for the role of Woo-jin, the man behind the imprisonment of Dae-su but I suppose that wouldn’t make much sense. Woo-jin is a much younger character. So Brolin gets to wear the shoes once filled by the amazing Choi Min-sik? It should be interesting to see what Brolin brings to the role.
Lee hopes to begin filming March of 2012. The story, “centers on a man who is kidnapped on his daughter’s birthday and held for 15 years in solitary confinement without explanation. He is eventually released and sets out on a path to take revenge on those who destroyed his life.”
There’s been word that the new script from Mark Protosevich (I AM LEGEND, THE CELL) will contain some new material but will remain faithful to the original manga. Influence will also come from Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film.
