Between DEADPOOL, X-FORCE, X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX and NEW MUTANTS the X-Men universe is about to blow up on movie screens in a way that only existed in the dreams of cosplaying fans. All these films are coming at us fast, with DEADPOOL 2 already underway and DARK PHOENIX getting ready to start. We can now add NEW MUTANTS to the list, as director Josh Boone took to Instagram to announce the start of filming.
The director of the new X-Universe film posted a pic of a gag gift he received from cinematographer Peter Deming, which parodies the hit 80s sitcom GROWING PAIN to awesome effect. Almost makes you wish Leonardo DiCaprio would get in on the superhero game.
Boone has described that the movie will be "a full-fledged horror movie" that takes inspiration from both Stephen King and John Hughes. The movie is believed to be taking hints from the “Demon Bear Saga” which involves the team of young mutants being tapped in a snowstorm, having to learn to work as a unit and overcome personal disagreements. The scenario has horror-drama-comedy written all over it, and if it sticks close to the format could make for a refreshing entry in the genre.
NEW MUTANTS sounds like the riskiest of the new X-MEN lot, but that means it also has potential to be a fantastic standout. Boone has assembled a fine young cast, notably Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik. The genre is in need of filmmakers who are thinking out of the box, and if SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING proved anything it’s that focusing on younger heroes with a Hughes style can work wonders. Throw in some demon bears and you got yourself a hit!
NEW MUTANTS is aiming for spring 2018 with Williams, Joy, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
