While TRON: LEGACY disappointed some, the score by Daft Punk was not one of the reasons. Daft Punk was the perfect choice to bring the video game world of The Grid to life and accented the visual style of the movie perfectly. For his highly buzzed follow up film, Joseph Kosinski has selected another electronic musician to bring a unique score to his vision.
French musician Anthony Gonzalez, known as the founder of the band M83, will provide original music for Kosinski’s OBLIVION. I think this is an inspired choice to compose the music. M83 is one of the bands I have on heavy rotation on my iPod. Their recent album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming is one of the best of the last year.
Kosinski told IndieWire “The story has a small cast of characters, it was designed as kind of a character-driven story, but at the same time it takes place in a vast world. So I need a score that is both emotional, but at the same time can feel big and have a lot of space in it. And his music has that. It’s emotional, it’s triumphant, it just has a spirit and a life to it,” Kosinski added. “It can feel very intimate but it also can feel just huge when it has to. His music is able to capture all those different feelings and qualities simultaneously.”
OBLIVION stars Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.. The cast also includes Olga Kurylenko, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo, and Morgan Freeman. Universal recently screened some footage of OBLIVION at CinemaCon which blew away audiences. Just as much as Koskinski raised the bar visually with TRON: LEGACY, expect him to do the same with OBLIVION.
Here are a couple of tracks by M83 to show you what to expect when we finally see OBLIVION when it hits theaters on April 26, 2013.
