Oh man, suddenly I have the urge to play some shirtless volleyball, fly a jet, and maybe make a playful biting gesture at one of my closest friends. Why would I want to do any of those things, you ask? Well, maybe it's because Tom Cruise has announced that he's gearing up for a return to the Danger Zone with TOP GUN 2, and director Joseph Kosinski may very well be his co-pilot.
While no official offer has been made, sources are reporting that Joseph Kosinski is now the frontrunner chosen by Paramount and Skydance Pictures to lead the high-flying, muscles-in-motion sequel to the 1986 smash hit. Skydance CEO David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original, will produce with Cruise.
As the story goes, Cruise (who worked with Kosinski on the film OBLIVION) met with several filmmakers while on the set of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 6, hoping that work on a TOP GUN sequel could begin shortly after wrapping production on the gasps-and-gadgets spy thriller.
Recently, Cruise appeared on a British talk show and was quick to tell audience members that, "It's happening. You're the first people I've told. It's going to happen." I'll also note that Cruise delivered the news while planted firmly in his chair, as opposed to any wild gestures he's been known to display in the past. You can't see me, but I'm winking at you, right now. Can you feel it? Excellent, then my job is done here.
While we're waiting for more details concerning TOP GUN 2, be sure to check out Tom Cruise when he stars beside Russell Crowe, Sofia Boutella, and Annabelle Wallis in Alex Kurtzman's THE MUMMY, which will shamble its way into theaters on June 9, 2017.
