Joseph Gordon-Levitt talks working on Sandman with Neil Gaiman

While you may see him getting knocked around pretty good in SIN CIY A DAME TO KILL FOR this weekend, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has actually left Frank Miller’s monochromatic world behind in favor of a different comic book universe, that of THE SANDMAN, Neil Gaiman’s epic series of graphic novels. Gordon-Levitt was the unusual choice tapped late last year to bring Gaiman’s distinct vision to the screen, and with David Goyer, writer Jack Thorne and Gaiman himself, he’ll attempt to do what so many others could not with the property: make a accessible film series out of it.

The actor was recently interviewed by Moviefone and provided a brief update on where the project stands. Hint: we’re not very close to seeing it happen.

Right now we’re working on a script. It’s me and Goyer and the screenwriter and Neil Gaiman, as well as the good folks at DC and Warner Bros. It’s a really cool team of people. It’s a lot of the same people who worked on the Nolan “Batman” movies. It’s really exciting. There’s not a script yet, we’re still kind of working it out because it’s such a complicated adaptation because “Sandman” wasn’t written as novels. “Sin City” was written as a novel. “Sandman” is 75 episodic issues. There’s a reason people have been trying and failing to adapt “Sandman” for the past 20 years.

It’s such a huge world. We’re definitely talking about in terms of a whole world.

I guess you can take all that to mean Warner Bros. and DC are still very intent on bringing THE SANDMAN to life, but it’s still very early in the process. Gaiman fans, you’re just going to have to wait a little – make that a lot – longer.
