With GHOST IN THE SHELL getting the live-action movie treatment, all I could think was, "Well, hopefully, this means we will be getting that long-awaited AKIRA live-action flick soon too." That is, if GHOST IN THE SHELL is a hit…
AKIRA is one of my favorite films and my favorite anime, and I know I am not alone in feeling this way. The story of two "brothers" finally having it out – and taking down an entire city in the process – is a tale that could be told in any country. Oh, and those motorcycle race/fight scenes are pimp af.
Turns out Warner Bros. is looking into a live-action film yet again, but this time they are supposedly courting a horror filmmaker! Yes, yes, Jaume Collet-Serra was at one time set to direct and he is known for horror (HOUSE OF WAX and ORPHAN are a few) but this time it's a true horror filmmaker.
Yes, Jordan Peele might direct the live-action AKIRA.
The Tracking Board is reporting the studio is moving aggressively to lock in GET OUT director Jordan Peele for the flick. And the talks have apparently been "encouraging". How f*cking cool is that?
Also worth noting is that fellow horror directors Daniel Espinosa (LIFE) and David F. Sandberg (LIGHTS OUT, ANNABELLE 2) are also in the running. I'd take Sandberg too. Just sayin'.
AKIRA is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, and Marco Ramirez (Netflix’s DAREDEVIL) wrote the most recent draft of the script.
Hope Peele does us a favor and recasts Allison Williams.
