In one sudden instance two things happened yesterday: 1.) The first trailer for Tom Hooper’s CATS was unveiled and 2.) The entire world was plunged into an inescapable nightmare where tap-dancing humanoid cats infest every waking second. The first trailer featured surreal visual effects and the major takeaway was that it was terrifying enough to be classified as a horror movie, and it didn’t take long for someone to correctly assume a track from Jordan Peele’s hit horror movie US fits perfectly over the footage. Better yet, Peele himself agrees.

Soon after the trailer’s drop, comedian Ian Abramson put out a new version wherein the classic music from the Broadway musical and the words of Dame Judi Dench as a cat are gone. In their place is Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It”, remixed with Michael Abel’s haunting score, which instantly left an impression on audiences when it was heard in US' own trailer (then made available on the movie's soundtrack). The tweet instantly started making the rounds and gathering likes, and it was only a matter of time before Peele happened upon it, giving it his mark of approval with a blunt, “Yes.”

From the moment it was announced a new movie adaptation of the iconic musical was in the works using state-of-the-art VFX, people were dreading what the actors – including Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, James Corden and more – would look like as CGI cats dancing around. Fears were brought to life yesterday when the insane-looking trailer showed the actors brought to life as CGI cats, their very human faces meshed with realistic fur, paws, and a tail. If you need a refresher, you can watch it again below. But it may have already replayed in your nightmares.
CATS is in theaters December 20.
