Jonathan Majors is going to have a massive year, as he has already left a mark at Sundance, has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will next don boxing gloves for Creed III. But one wonders how much any of that—save maybe for Sundance—would have happened if he had let impatience get the best of him.
In a new Vanity Fair interview, Jonathan Majors recalled how he almost skipped out on his initial Marvel meeting because he was being made to wait too long. “I hope this doesn’t bite me in the ass, but I walked out of my Marvel general [meeting]…This was a long time ago. I had just gotten out of drama school and I’m running around town and I’m sitting in the office. I grew up in a very particular way and I don’t want to waste nobody’s time. So I got in there and they’re just busy. And I was like, ‘I’m supposed to be here, right?’ It got long and I went, ‘I’m just going to go. It’s cool. I’ll just go.’”
Fortunately, Jonathan Majors didn’t make it too far before he was pulled back into the Marvel meeting. “We got in the room and we chatted. We were having this great conversation. I think it was three years later that we had the Kang chat. And there’s no trepidation now, especially because of who Kang is. When I said yes, we got the whole picture, and what is being laid out is cohesive.”
While there’s no telling exactly if bailing on the meeting altogether would have affected Jonathan Major’s career, that he did eventually land a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows the sort of charisma, charm and determination he must have.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania may be one of the worst-reviewed MCU movies so far–it’s just one of two (along with Eternals) that has a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes–but Jonathan Majors is earning major praise for his performance as Kang the Conqueror. His turn in next month’s Creed III is also leaving its mark.
