After this morning's surprising announcement that Sony Pictures Entertainment and The Walt Disney Studios have struck a deal to have Kevin Feige produce a third film in the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING series, it's been announced that Jon Watts, who directed the first two films in the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING series, is in final talks to helm the third film belonging to the beloved superhero saga.
According to Deadline – who exclusively broke the news about Watts possibly making his return to the series – a deal is expected to wrap "very soon." Details suggest that Sony and Disney/Marvel just need to put the finishing touches on their co-financing agreement before Watts' contract can be all webbed up.
It should come as no surprise to fans of the Spider-Man franchise that Watts is being eyed for a return. I mean, you don't earn over $2 billion dollars for a company only to have them be like, "Meh. We'll find someone else, but thanks for web-swinging by. Be sure to pick up your complimentary tote bag on the way out. It comes with a nifty water bottle and some signature chocolates."
Not long after it was announced that Tom Holland would return for a third Spider-Man film under Feige's influence, the wall-crawling actor posted an all-too-perfect response to his personal Instagram account … THE WOLF OF WALLSTREET style!
The third Spider-Man from Marvel Studios is set for a July 16, 2021 release, which means that Marvel's Phase 4 plans have added yet another project to the initiative's jam-packed slate of feature films. You do know what this means, don't you? It means that we're getting four MCU films in 2021 alone! Let's work our way down the list, shall we? SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS opens on February 12, DOCTOR STRANGE AND THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS opens on May 7, and THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER will come crashing down on November 5! Holy cats! That's a lot of flerken Marvel movies, folks!
