With the phenomenal Mad Men coming to a close in 2015, you'd think Don Draper himself, Jon Hamm, would have been eager to swoop up another steady gig. It seems that he feels exactly the opposite, especially when it comes to comic book films, despite fan's wishes. Hamm has been rumored to be up for comic book movie roles in the past, but nothing ever came of it. While Hamm doesn't divulge which roles he was up for, it looks like that in the end, he didn't feel the urge to take part in any of them. You can check out more of the interview here, but I've included some tidbits on what he thinks about the public's perception of non-superhero actors below.
How Jon Hamm feels the public perceives him:
Other than being old and irrelevant in the current media landscape I don't think about technology. Ask anyone under the age of twenty if they have heard of me and they will go 'no, that guy looks like my dad'. It doesn't compute to the generation that most of Hollywood cares about, If your last name's not Hemsworth or you are not in One Direction or you don’t wear a cape and tights for a living, you literally have a hard time making an impression.
Why he's turned down superhero roles:
The deals that they make you do are so draconian. And, of course, you are signed on for not only the movie that you are signed on for… but at least two more that you haven’t read and you have no idea what they are going to be and all the crossover ones you are going to have to do. For me to sign on now to do a superhero movie would mean I would be working until I am fifty as that particular superhero. It’s a lot of work at one thing which is not necessarily the reason I got into the business which is to do many things. If you want to spend all day pressing the same key that… seems an odd choice.
If anything, Hamm seems like he's a very straightforward guy, which I really respect. Despite the great quality of comic book films (especially Marvel) these days, it's hard to argue with signing what's essentially a blind contract. I understand that Marvel wants to lock in these great actors regarding sequels and cross-overs, but that doesn't give the actor much (if any) wiggle room regarding the story and how it may pan out. Still, I hope Hamm finds something worthy of his talents on the silver screen. The man knocked it out of the park as Don Draper and I hope he finds his cinematic equivalent.
You can HEAR Jon Hamm next in the DESPICABLE ME spin-off MINIONS, which hits theaters on July 10, 2015.
Clearly Sergio should be given the feature-film treatment.
