Next year’s TOG GUN: MAVERICK will deliver on the sequel to the 1986 classic that fans have been dying to see, and Tom Cruise and Co. are not looking to let anyone down. Word is they’re pulling out all the stops to deliver on some tremendous fighter plane action, and star Jon Hamm recently talked about how the technology they’re using to bring it all to life has never been seen before.

Hamm was at the premiere of Amazon’s GOOD OMENS recently when he spoke with Collider about the upcoming sequel directed by Joseph Kosinski (TRON: LEGACY), and though he couldn’t give away any major details, he did talk about how impressed he was by the filming techniques used to capture “mind-blowing” aerial sequences.

“They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen. We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”

The original movie is a hallmark of the era, and one no doubt Hamm was familiar. He continued, saying how being on the set that looked so identical to the original was a surreal experience.

“It’s a very strange experience but it’s been a wonderful experience as well. It’s basically getting the whole team back together. Unfortunately, [original director] Tony Scott is unavailable, but they’ve achieved a very similar vibe to the first one. I think it’s gonna be, for the people who love the first movie I think it’s gonna’ be very interesting to watch. It very much takes the story in a different direction. But I think for the new fans it’s gonna be something very cool, too. I’ve seen some of the footage, it is out of this world.”

The story of the new movie centers on Miles Teller’s Bradley Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s (Cruise) late partner Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Cruise’s Maverick is now a flight instructor and takes on a mentorship role for the young Bradshaw, while the movie will supposedly address modern warfare and drones. The movie also stars Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm and Ed Harris.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK is set for June 26, 2020.
