Jon Favreau wants to make another Star Wars Holiday Special for Disney+

Jon Favreau, Star Wars Holiday Special, Disney+

If you've never seen the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, then you're simultaneously extremely lucky but also missing out on something quite bizarre. The made-for-TV movie came out a little over the year after the release of the first film and featured much of the original cast, including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher, taking part in a ridiculous story which had to do with getting Chewbacca back to his home planet in order to celebrate Life Day. Toss in Chewbacca's family: father Itchy, wife Malla, and son Lumpy, along with some song and dance segments, comedy skits, and a cartoon (which introduced Boba Fett for the first time), and you've got the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, which truly needs to be seen to be believed.

The STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL was almost immediately despised upon release, even by George Lucas, but one person who wants to give it another shot is The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau. While speaking with ETOnline at the Saturn Awards, Favreau revealed that he's a big fan of the infamous HOLIDAY SPECIAL.

I was the one who was bringing The Holiday Special to the table, that's my generation. I love The Holiday Special — certain sequences more than others — but I love the introduction of Boba Fett and that rifle that he had. That animated piece still holds up. It's pretty cool. I draw inspiration from that.

Not only that, but Jon Favreau said that he would love to do his own version of the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL for Disney+, saying, "wouldn't that be wonderful? I gotta pitch that to them," before turning to the camera and adding, "If you want to see a Holiday Special, let Disney+ know." There you have it, folks. Begin the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL sequel campaign! Is there a way to make the HOLIDAY SPECIAL format work? Probably, but I doubt anyone out there (besides Favreau) genuinely wants a sequel beyond morbid curiosisty. Sound off in the comments below!

While I doubt that a STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL sequel will come to pass, we do have several major STAR WARS projects just over the horizon. We've got The Mandalorian, which follows a lone bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal) in the outer reaches of the galaxy as he sets out to collect a particularly difficult prize. In addition to Pascal, the cast of The Mandalorian also includes Giancarlo Esposito, Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, Carl Weathers, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Taika Waititi, Ming-Na Wen, and Werner Herzog. The first episode of The Mandalorian will premiere when Disney+ launches on November 12, 2019. We've also got STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER hitting theaters on December 20, 2019, which is said to serve as the culmination of the entire nine-film saga.
