Netflix still hasn't announced the date when their series based on the Marvel Comics property The Punisher is going to be released through their streaming service, but they have started up the marketing machine. The teaser for the series hit at the end of last week, and now the company has also released a new image of star Jon Bernthal in costume as the titular character.
An official synopsis for the series hasn't been released yet, but if you know The Punisher I'm sure you know what to expect – a man with a tragic past is going to be killing a whole lot of criminals.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe version of The Punisher made his debut in the second season of the Netflix Daredevil series. The story told there:
Francis "Frank" Castle Sr. is a vigilante who assumed the identity of the Punisher after the brutal murder of his entire family, aiming to clean up New York City of crime by any means necessary. While searching for all those responsible for his family's deaths, Castle came into conflict with Daredevil, who felt Castle's methods were too extreme. Castle was soon arrested for his crimes and, despite the efforts of Nelson and Murdock, was sentenced to life in prison. However, Castle was freed with the help of Wilson Fisk, and soon discovered the Blacksmith was the one responsible for his family's murder. Once he had his revenge, Castle helped Daredevil defeat the Hand, and then proceeded to move on from his own past, now dedicating his life to permanently punishing criminals wherever he found them, aiming to make the city a better place.
The Punisher has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters, so I am very much looking forward to watching him continue to kick ass on Netflix.
Netflix will be releasing the first season of The Punisher sometime before the end of 2017. We'll let you know as soon as the exact date is revealed.
