Johnny English would seem to be a uniquely British creation, as I don’t think his original film gained much if any traction in the States. But the trademark subtlety of British humor is shall we say, lacking here in the sequel, JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN.
But they do have their chief slapstick-in-chief candidate on the job. He may not be Gervais or Pegg, but Rowan Atkinson was making everyone laugh years before they were popular, and not even speaking a word while he did so. Well, he’s talking here as English, but his physical comedy seems quite a bit more obvious than the nuanced performances he gave as Mr. Bean.
