It’s been one year since the verdict was reached in the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. And now that it finally looks to be over, with Johnny Depp making a return at Cannes and Heard livin’ la vida loca in Spain, Depp’s lawyer is reflecting on the much-publicized trial, which was one of the biggest pop culture stories of the year.

Speaking with People, Johnny Depp’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez, stated, “I’m so proud of the work we did, and it wasn’t just me; this is a tremendous team with mostly associates that worked their little tail feathers off to do the job that we were able to do…We were such a team and we’re still so united and we care about one another.” She also drove home the point that Depp was undoubtedly the victor in the dispute. “Ms. Heard did pay Mr. Depp, not the other way around. I want to make that very, very clear…The judgment still stands. It will always still stand for the remainder of time. And Mr. Depp will be donating the money that Ms. Heard paid to settle the appeal to a number of charities.”

While the verdict was reached in June 2022, Johnny Depp would go on to appeal his ex’s $2 million reward, which Heard later decided to settle, going on to say she lost faith in the American judicial system and, evidently, the media who covered the trial.

Vasquez, who has also served as lawyer for the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, said that Johnny Depp is doing just as well as he can be, no doubt proving to be still welcome in the industry following a seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes. “The last time I spoke to [Depp] on the phone was probably a few months ago, but we text often. There’s a group of us that texts with him and we send emails, obviously congratulating him on the success that he’s had in the last year. He has a big birthday coming up, so I’m sure he’ll be celebrating — foot up because, as you’ve seen, probably, reported in the news, unfortunately our guy got a fracture in, I believe, his ankle.” That big birthday, on June 9th, will be his 60th.

Vasquez also said she may co-author a book about the saga. Hey, it couldn’t be worse than the made-for-TV movie!
