Steven Spielberg's next film, THE BFG, hits theaters on July 1st and will feature the return of maestro John Williams. As you may have noticed, Williams was absent from BRIDGE OF SPIES due to some surgery and his time spent working on THE FORCE AWAKENS. It looks like Williams is back, as he's just told Variety that he plans on writing music for Spielberg's READY PLAYER ONE this November. Not content to deliver just one Spielberg score, the director himself confirmed at the American Film Tribute that Williams would also be scoring INDIANA JONES 5, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 19, 2019. As if that wasn't exciting enough, the man also stated that he intends to work on STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII! That is, if they'll have him!
John Williams on writing music for EPISODE VIII:
If I can do it, I certainly will. I told Kathy Kennedy I’m happy to do it, but the real reason is, I didn’t want anybody else writing music for Daisy Ridley.
I can't imagine anyone who WOULDN'T want to work with Williams, especially on a STAR WARS film, so I'm hoping we have some official news soon regarding his return to a galaxy far, far away. In any case, he has plenty of time to work on READY PLAYER ONE this fall, and then the bulk of next year on EPISODE VIII (if he needs it). Rey's theme from FORCE AWAKENS was a musical highlight, so I'm looking forward to hearing Williams expand on the theme in the next installment!
READY PLAYER ONE is scheduled to hit theaters on March 30, 2018.
