John Stamos wanted off of Full House because Stephanie was getting laughs

John Stamos may have toured with The Beach Boys, had a terrific stint on ER and made a deal with the devil to look that good on the brink of 60, but he will always be Uncle Jesse to us. But as it turns out, John Stamos didn’t enjoy certain aspects of Full House, admitting that early on he did not have mercy on his co-stars – Michelle, Stephanie and D.J., that is.

On a recent episode of First We Feast’s Hot Ones, John Stamos remembered being heated when his younger Full House co-stars were getting the bulk of the attention. “I hated that show,” he said, before admitting, “Obviously, I ended up loving it.” The center of his problems came in the form of Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner. “[She] reads her lines [at a table read], and people are dying laughing, I mean screaming. I was like, ‘What’s happening here?’’” In other words, how rude! He noted, “I was slinking into my chair, you couldn’t even hear my lines, they were laughing so hard at her,” pushing him to call his agent and request in no uncertain terms, “Get me the f*ck off this show!” Of course, John Stamos would remain on Full House for its entire eight-season, 192-episode run, even reprising Uncle Jesse for sequel series Fuller House.

John Stamos hasn’t exactly been shy about his troubles with the Full House rugrats, admitting that he couldn’t stand working with the Olsen twins, who wouldn’t stop crying – you know, being babies and all, going so far as to say they weren’t nearly as cute as everyone else thought. But Stamos eventually came around on Mary-Kate, Ashley and Jodie. “I fought it for a long time…And then I finally said, ‘What am I doing, it’s a beautiful show.’ We built it with sweetness and kindness.” Cue the audience going Awwww…
