So after CARS 3, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY and FINDING DORY, we're finally getting a Pixar sequel people want: INCREDIBLES 2! And while it's still a year away, producer John Lasseter was able to give some details to IGN from the D23 Expo, such as how it begins "a minute" after the first film:
It starts right as the first one finishes, so it just carries on…It starts with the Underminer and a big old set piece. You know that at the end of the first movie when he comes up and you see the family dressed as superheroes, well that's where start this movie.
Brad Bird is again writing and directing, and Lasseter went on to say "one of the unique things about the Incredibles is it's really a story of a family set in the world of superheroes. This one carries on that theme…It's awesome, the idea we came up with — simple as that…We love to really look at our own lives and look at what's going on, and find themes that we know will resonate with the audience."
I'm so pumped! I loved the first film, the world it created, and the true-to-life family dynamics they went through (the arguing about which exit to take off the highway during the climax definitely brought back memories). If the sequel can tap into those things again, we should be fine. And Pixar has had a decent track record with sequels, no matter how unnecessary (minus a CARS 2 or 3). So I'm hopeful.
Meanwhile, THE INCREDIBLES 2 will charge into theaters June 15th, 2018.
