John Krasinski on why he decided to return to write A Quiet Place 2

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

A QUIET PLACE became quite the success story, earning $338 million worldwide and receiving rave reviews, so it was only natural that talk of a sequel began almost immediately. Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos confirmed during CinemaCon that they were in the process of developing a follow-up and the studio later set a release date for the sequel. Although John Krasinski co-wrote, directed, and starred in A QUIET PLACE, he initially didn't expect to return for more, telling THR that he told his wife Emily Blunt that he "preferred to leave it as a special experience they shared together." During a Q&A at the Silver Screen Theatre, Krasinski elaborated on what drew him back.

That was my intention for the movie itself. Then I had this small idea for a sequel, but I didn't think it would go anywhere. So, I said to the studio, 'Just go do the movie with somebody else.' They heard some pitches, and I told Drew [Form, producer] about this little idea, and he told me to think about it a little longer. And then I thought, 'This might really work.' So, I'm currently writing the sequel.

It's just that easy, folks. It remains to be seen what John Krasinski's small idea for the sequel is, but producer Andrew Form has previously said that they're not about to rush into it. "We’re lucky on this one. I’ve had movies where the studio says to you, ‘Here’s your date. Let’s go!’ and on this one we’re not rushing anything, which is amazing," Form said. "So we’re gonna take our time, we’re gonna figure out where to go, but there is no rush on it and we’re just starting to talk about it. We’re figuring out what everyone’s involvement’s gonna be and what the actual next movie’s gonna be. The first one is so special to us that we really want to take our time with this and not rush anything."

Krasinski does have quite a large amount of back-story dealing with the creatures in A QUIET PLACE which was never revealed, aside from a few tidbits on that board in the basement, so it's possible some of that could come into play. "I have the whole backstory, I know exactly where they're from and what day and where it happened. But I want to only tell it on this board," Krasinski said.

The sequel to A QUIET PLACE will hit theaters on May 15, 2020.
