Looks like Timur Bekmambetov (WANTED) just can't get himself enough of horror-thrillers that all take place from the POV of a laptop and/or PC. After all, the man produced the recent teen horror flick UNFRIENDED (and its upcoming sequel) and now he has SEARCHING coming soon.
This new film stars John Cho (THE EXORCIST, THE GRUDGE Remake) along with Debra Messing (THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES), Joseph Lee, and Michelle La. And marks co-writer/director Aneesh Chaganty's feature debut. The film follows Cho as
David Kim who, when his 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter’s laptop. In a hyper-modern thriller told via the technology devices we use every day to communicate, David must trace his daughter’s digital footprints before she disappears forever.
And if you're still interested in checking out this flick after reading all of that (nothing but love for Cho) then you can check out the trailer and poster below. I'm not going to bash this film as I totally plan on seeing it as soon as I can. I dig mostly everything Cho has put out, and I have to admit that the film's premise and trailer are pretty gripping. I just think this whole "laptop-POV" thing was cool in OPEN WINDOWS and UNFRIENDED, but I'm thinking it will grow old as hell by the time this film hits. We'll see.
Screen Gems will be putting the film out in theaters come August 3rd so stay tuned as I'm sure we'll be hearing a bit more about this film before it lands later this summer.
