John Cena: Retirement is coming soon

“You can’t see me!” may be his catchphrase but that might soon be a reality, as WWE superstar and all-around incredible guy John Cena says that his retirement is imminent.

In an interview during last week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, John Cena told viewers, “As I said out there in the ring, the last one is not tonight, but I know it’s soon…Every single chance I get to go out there becomes more and more special. There is no denying the fact that I’m 46 and staring down 47. I’ve been here for over two decades. As I said out there in the ring, the last one is not tonight, but I know it’s soon. To speak candidly, when you’re involved in this every day in a full-time capacity, you just think about what’s next.” His return to weekly television is expected to be a temporary one, although he is lined up for the rest of October.

John Cena – who was recently seen in Barbie – also gave much credit for his continued passion to the fans. “The WWE Universe being gracious to invite me and allow me back to be part of this family, for the last two or three years, I’ve been able to focus on what’s now. I never miss any of those wonderful moments in the ring. I know it may sound repetitive, but so is me saying ‘Never give up,’ and I never mind saying that, so I never mind saying ‘thank you’ to the people that make this special. Without them and them caring, I don’t get to come back.”

John Cena’s most recent match was a loss to Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39, with a scheduled tag team match with Seth Rollins at WWE Superstar Spectacle, marking the first time Cena will wrestle in India. Over the weekend he served as special guest referee at Payback.

As for what the remainder of John Cena’s in-ring future holds, there are a few options. Some have speculated that the WWE could give John Cena one more world title, which would see him top Ric Flair. Both wrestlers have 16, the current record. Traditionally, a legend on the way out will put over a wrestler on the rise. Considering this felt like the intention of his Theory match, one does wonder if this would really be the plan yet again.
