Seems like a pretty solid confirmation to me.
Vin Diesel took to Instagram to announce that the long running franchise has tapped star Cena for the latest installment, which is slated to release in 2020. Diesel shares the following sentiment with his fans: "Guys, as you know, I'm always thinking fast, and thinking about the responsibility of making something iconic and deserving of your loyalty," Diesel said. "I know this sounds crazy, but every blue moon I feel like Pablo up there sends me someone. Another soldier in the fight for truth. Today, someone came by Toretto Gym that speaks to what Pablo would have brought."
In the video, Diesel holds the camera up to his sunglass-covered face to take a little moment to chat with his Family one on one before panning the camera to reveal WWE Superstar John Cena at his side. The video ends with a final "All love. Always." Diesel added the caption "Thank you Pablo" at the bottom of his post, taking a moment to thank his late friend and co-star Paul Walker.
With HOBBS AND SHAW coming out this year, it is likely Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham might leave the core franchise if their spin-off does well at the box office. That means FAST AND FURIOUS will be wanting to get some fresh blood in there to spice things up again. Adding Cena to the roster could prove to be a good move in the end, especially if the writers capitalize on the wrestler-turned-actor's impressively well-timed comedic chops.
FAST AND FURIOUS 9 is to be helmed by Justin Lin, who directed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth entries in the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise. FAST AND FURIOUS 9 is slated for a 2020 release.
