Look, I know that sometimes you have to change the title of a film in order not to confuse potential moviegoers. I get that PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF is better served as just PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS, or PERCY JACKSON AND THE LIGHTNING THIEF or whatever it ended up being, but taking the “MARS” out of “JOHN CARTER“? What the hell?
The title change news comes via Dark Horizons, and I can’t for the life of me figure out what they were going for here. Who wants to go see a movie called “JOHN CARTER”? It sounds like the adventures of a suburban dentist. He’s not Truman Capote or Muhammad Ali, people aren’t going to see his film based of off name recognition.
If anything, if they really wanted to cut some words out, “OF MARS” would be more interesting title, but obviously the whole thing would be ideal. Speculation is that the studio is trying to distance themselves from the recent MARS NEEDS MOMS bomb, which clearly has just ruined Mars for everyone ever now. Thanks guys.
So, is this just stupid, or really stupid?
